Our health depends on the ability to burn fat… or not. We tend to gain weight not because we eat foods high in fat, but because we have lost the ability to burn body fat. For the same reason, we can acquire diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis and other chronic diseases of aging. According to Dr. Ron Rosedale and his extensive research on metabolism, the most important and influential hormones that regulate metabolism and influence aging are insulin and leptin. These hormones are controlled almost entirely by diet; there are no drugs that can accomplish this. The damage associated with aging is determined by the ongoing battle of cell damage and repair of that damage, which is largely controlled by the type of fuel we burn - fat or sugar - and hormones these foods stimulate- again, insulin and leptin. The foods best at minimizing damage to “turn on” genes that allow for increased repair and help reduce the symptoms of aging consist of moderate protein and beneficial fat with as little sugar forming foods as possible.
