The power of sound

“The medicine of the future is sound.”
Edgar Cayce

Yesterday I took my grandson who’s three, to his nursery school where a very nice man called Norman came along with a selection of drums, tambourines and noise shakers, to introduce these preschoolers to a drum circle.  What a great lesson. They loved it.

I did too. I’ve been fascinated by sound for years, especially for its effect on healing. You know how different music can make you feel right?  In fact music as a healing influence affecting health and behavior dates back to the writings of Aristotle and Plato.

Now, at last, the science and medical world are realizing the amazing potential of music and health. According to a recent study in the UK, listening to music can boost your immune system and may help fight off disease. How fabulous is that? And no drugs!  The researchers, from Sussex University and the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig, Germany, say their findings demonstrate how music could be used to help aid patients’ recovery while in hospital.  Dr Ronny Enk, a neurocognition expert at the Max Planck Institute, who led the research, said: “We think the pleasant state that can be induced by music leads to special physiological changes which eventually lead to stress reduction or direct immune enhancement.  Stress reduction probably plays an important role, but the stress reducing effect seems to be different for various types of music.”

Sound affects us on both conscious and unconscious levels. The power of sound for instance can energise the body, remove pain or induce relaxation by soothing the nervous system. It also has the amazing ability to lift our spirits in times of depression and grief….so this would be a good time to listen to uplifting and calming music! The most important thing you can do for yourself is to feel good… no matter what!

The American Music Therapy Association describes sound as “an established healthcare profession that uses music to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals of all ages.  Music therapy improves the quality of life for persons who are well and meets the needs of children and adults with disabilities or illnesses.

As a sound healer I use tuning forks that have specific sound frequencies which relate to different parts of the body, and by the process of resonance bring the body back into balance and harmony. My clients love them and best of all, I have had wonderful results.

So don’t forget to include the powerful effects of music in your daily life, and use it to ease the stress of these challenging times. Listen to music that makes you feel happy.  Dancing around the living room to your favourite tracks or listening to gentle sounds is the most enjoyable way to relax. You’ll feel great, your cells will thank you, and your immune system will get a boost in the bargain!

I had given up any hope of a cure to a long standing illness until a friend recommended I try working with a sound therapist or as I was to find out a skilled practioner in the use of tuning forks. Only because I was at my wits end I agreed to the meeting. One month later all my symptoms have vanished. I have moved from skeptic to raging advocate regarding healing through sound
