Skin’s Organic Slippery Slope

Your skin — it’s the largest, most elastic, most accommodating organ in your body. It’s totally porous making it totally absorbent and vulnerable. It dents and scratches easily but mends itself miraculously. And we don’t take proper care of it. We take it for granted — maybe because we see it all the time, so we don’t really see it. We don’t treat it with nearly the respect it deserves. I didn’t say that we don’t baby it with lotions and creams, but what’s in those lotions, soaps, and creams? Question the ingredients. You read labels for what you put into yourself, so read labels for what you put onto yourself, because you are also putting those into yourself. They don’t wash off. It’s all absorbed — your skin is eating it and it goes into your bloodstream just as if you put it in your mouth. The same rules apply starting with: if you can’t pronounce it, don’t use it. The problem with personal care products claiming to be natural and organic, without the industry being regulated by the FDA like it is for organic/natural foods by the USDA, you really can’t trust the hype on the front of the product. You have to read the ingredients and educate yourself on what’s good, what you want on your body. Organic with USDA approval is more trustworthy. So look for that stamp on personal care products. In my opinion, you should be able to eat your skin care products! Do a little research and make your own. My personal preference is using different organic oils: organic, extra virgin olive oil or dark toasted sesame oil for instance. (The oil scents fade very fast.) I’m just throwing this out there: you can use those as a base with pureed avocado mixed with mashed fragrant, edible flowers. Why not? Make it up ‘out of the box’ just for yourself as you go along. The skin you’re in will love you and appreciate you for it.
