Celebrate Independence Day the Eco Way!

Posted by Jessica Jensen

fireworksThis weekend is the Independence Day holiday– and that means we’ll be lighting up the BBQ, consuming beverages, throwing out paper plates and generally wasting resources while we enjoy ourselves.  So we’ve come up with a list of easy things you can do to lower the environmental impact of this fun, important holiday.  It’s Independence Day, the Eco Way!

1. Light that BBQ with Propane. Wood and charcoal may seem like more natural fuel sources, but propane burns cleaner. You’ll have less smoke and less of a challenge keeping a fire going. Make sure that you refill or recycle your propane tank once it’s empty.

2. Use reusable plates and cups– or use recycled and/or biodegradable ones.  Think of all of the millions of plastic and paper plates and cups being tossed out this weekend! It’s scary.  You can really help out by either using sturdy, reusable plastic-ware and washing it after use. Or you can get compostable and biodegradable tableware that are great and will make an interesting conversation point for your event!

3.  Put out a clearly-labeled recycling bin next to the trash basket.  Make it clear to people that “this is the bin for your cans, bottles, plastic cups, etc.”  If you make it easy for people, they will do it.  And you won’t have to sort stuff at the end of the party!

4.  Use tap water rather than bottled water. We know it’s hot, and bottled water is easy, but just fill some big pitchers up with water for people. You’ll cut your plastic use in a big way.

5.  Skip the at-home fireworks. Naturally something that explodes, creates lots of light and leaves a cloud of smoke also comes with pollution. Fireworks also release heavy metals like lead into the air.  Leave the fireworks to the professionals.

6.  If you’re planning to go to the beach, know the condition of the beach before you go.  Check out Beaches911.com to learn about the health conditions of the beach, any beach closures, and also eco-smart boating tips.

7. If you are taking a road trip of any kind, make sure to maximize your gas mileage.  You could either rent a hybrid if you don’t have one– or make sure your tires are well-inflated, keep the AC as low as possible, and follow these tips for how to green your road trip.

Have a safe, healthy, fun holiday!

Environmental Defense Action FundOperation Climate Vote

*** Breaking News *** Breaking News *** Breaking News ***

House Passes Landmark Climate Bill. Stage is Set for Senate Action.

Dear Randi,

We did it!

Moments ago, on a 219 to 212 vote, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the landmark American Clean Energy and Security Act, the most important environmental and energy legislation in our nation’s history.

Environmental Defense Action Fund and our broad network of members, activists and strategic partners played a huge role in pushing this bill over the top.

You helped generate tens of thousands of emails, thousands of phone calls, dozens of paid ads, and countless legislative contacts with key House members and their staff.

EDF President Fred Krupp released the following statement:

Today’s vote is a huge achievement for the country and the climate, and we applaud Speaker Pelosi, Chairmen Waxman and Markey, and all members of the House who helped craft this landmark legislation and get it passed.

The bill that emerged from the House has the fundamental structure we need to significantly reduce carbon pollution while growing the economy. It puts strong cap on emissions and reorients our energy market to make low-carbon power the goal. It ensures that utility rates will stay affordable and a competitive playing field for U.S. companies.

Today’s vote opens the door for President Obama to sign comprehensive climate legislation into law this year.

For everything you and the rest of our Action Network community did to help us achieve this historic victory, we can’t thank you enough.

This is a day to remember, the day we began turning the corner toward a green energy future — a future free from the catastrophic threats of run-away global warming.

We have our work cut out for us in the Senate, but today’s victory gives us real hope of finally signing climate legislation into law.

Thanks for your activism and support and for everything you help make possible,

– All of us here on the National Climate Campaign

Going Back In Time to 1969…

Woodstock ‘69

Woodstock
Written by Joni Mitchell, performed by
Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young

Well, I came upon a child of God
He was walking along the road
And I asked him, ‘Tell where are you going?’
This he told me

Said, ‘I¹m going down to Yasgur’s Farm,
Gonna join in a rock and roll band.
Got to get back to the land and set my soul free.’

We are stardust, we are golden,
We are billion year old carbon,
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden.

‘Well, then can I walk beside you?
I have come to lose the smog,
And I feel like I’m a cog in something turning.
And maybe it’s the time of year,
Yes and maybe it’s the time of man.
And I don’t know who I am,
But life is for learning.’

We are stardust, we are golden,
We are billion year old carbon.
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden.
We are stardust, we are golden,
We are billion year old carbon.
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden.

By the time we got to Woodstock,
We were half a million strong
And everywhere was a song and a celebration.
And I dreamed I saw the bomber death planes
Riding shotgun in the sky,
Turning into butterflies
Above our nation.

We are stardust, we are golden,
We caught in the devil¹s bargain,
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden.

Cost of Living - 1969

Average income (1 person) was…. $ 6,500.00
A new house cost approx…………… $ 40,000.00
A gallon of gas cost……………… $ .30
A Fillmore concert poster……….. $ 1.25
A new car cost cost approx…… $ 2000.00
A gallon of milk cost…………….. $ 1.10
A loaf of bread cost……………… $ .20

A concert ticket to the greatest concert
of all time sold for $6.00 per day

*No money, not much anyway, was received that day “at the door”.Two weeks
before the festival, after months of work, they were informed by the town
fathers they couldn’t have the festival at the original site. So they had 2 weeks
to do an impossible job, getting another site ready. The fences weren’t even up.
And the utterchaos was not expected. Three times the amount of people! So
early on the first day, they got on the loud speakers and told the kids that were swarming in that it was a FREE concert. It took the promoter 10 yrs.
to pay off debts incurred that weekend, but he did it!

CTNGreen’s Top 7 Musicians…for now…

May 20, 2009 by Randi · Leave a Comment

It doesn’t matter what you have, it’s the things you do that make you who you are. These people are part of a larger group of great people. Seven is a lucky, mystical, spiritual number, & we want to use it for that reason, but don’t for a minute think that we don’t know that there’s waaay more than 7…ok?  Good! Also, the order is random, I picked them by closing my eyes…

#1.  Perry Farrellwww.PerryFarrell.com & www.Lollapalooza.com …In 1991 he created Lollapalooza as a farewell tour for his band, Jane’s Addiction. Lollapalooza has “…provided a platform for non-profit and political groups”. When asked in a 2003 CNN.com/TheMusicRoom interview, how he picked bands for Lolla, “…I look at the players and decide, oddly enough, if I’d like to sit down and eat with them. Because I feel like if they’re people that I’d like to sit down and have a meal with at a table, at a dinner table, after the show as we are finishing up here and then we sit down and eat–who I’d want to converse with and who I’d like to travel…And I check out their style, their sense of style and creativity and their political slants on things as well.” His main word for Lollapalooza is “interactive”…Look up Lollapalooza if you wanna get inspired!

#2.  Jack Johnson… www.JackJohnsonMusic.com  …Ok, I’m gonna start this way: www.AllAtOnce.org, www.ClimateControl.org, www.Surfrider.org, www.HeadCount.org, www.VotetheEnvironment.org, www.OnePercentForThePlanet.org…His tours, as of December 2008, have had: 24,804 volunteer hours committed, 373,415 shopping bags saved, 212,245 water bottles saved, $10.6 million sustainable spending dollars committed…4,172 metric tons of CO2 were offset from his 2008 tour alone…want more? check out the 2008 World Tour Environmental Impact Results on his site…He is so making a difference!

#3.  Bono…www.U2.com & www.atU2.com…Live Aid in the 8o’s sparked his concern as an activist. “The music of U2 has always been about heart and mind, body and soul. Down the years the band have successfully thrown a spotlight on the work of key campaigning groups who are trying to make the world a better place. From Amnesty International and Greenpeace through to DATA (Debt Aid Trade Africa), ONE, (Product (Red) Global Fund to fight Aids, TB & Malaria, and the Chernobyl Children’s Project, U2 have used benefit concerts, songwriting, public campaigning, special visits and fund-raising projects to promote a range of charities and activist communities worldwide.”  ”…despite all his influence among the wealthy and famous, Bono’s greatest impact arguably lies with the millions of ordinary individuals whose lives he has touched and transformed…” Rock Royalty!

#4.  Dave Matthews Band k/a DMB…www.DaveMatthewsBand.com & www.ReverbRock.org…check out his 2009 Bama Green Project Website. Workin’ hard, and obviously having fun touring, he’s in an “ongoing partnership between DMB, Reverb, & IZSTYLE, the Bama Green Project encompasses all of the environmental efforts undertaken by the band while on the road, in the studio or at home.” They’re “…also dedicated to educating DMB fans around the world about how to take simple & positive environmental actions.” The Band’s Touring Green Elements: Calculated & neutralized the carbon footprint of the tour, Biodiesel fueling, waste reduction & recycling backstage, Biodegradable & compostable catering products, Eco-friendly merchandise, Green sponsorship, PickupPal Ride-share program, Reverb Eco-Village at every show, & DMB eco-pamphlets (soy based ink printed on FSC certified paper) distributed by volunteers. He’s a Greenie!

#5.  Ben Harper and Relentless7…www.Relentless7.BenHarper.com & www.myspace.com/Relentlessseven…Scheduled for Lollapalooza, & Bonnaroo, as part of an extensive 2009 tour around the world, this ‘new’ band is not so new…their music happens to “capture human emotion” wherever they play. “In November 2008, the band debuted their new material on the Vote For Change Tour…” “This is American Rock, the way it is supposed to sound and feel”…White Lies For Dark Times dropped on May 5th. We feel these guys & like what that feels like…make sense?

#6.  Michael Franti & Spearhead…www.SpearheadVibrations.com…okay ‘lissen’ up: Coachella, Bumbershoot, Rock the Vote, MusicForDemocracy.org, HeadCount.org, WaterKeeper Alliance, Surfrider Foundation, Doctors Without Borders, Iraq Veterans Against War, International Network, Common Ground Relief, CARE, Amnesty International, Nuke Free Future, !RESISTANCE!, Vision Generation, & The Obama Song…”As a musician and a man, I more than anything else want to be a unifier”, k/a a modern day troubadour for “…giving an impromptu performance in some war-torn corner of the world”, “The problems from global warming to the economy that we face today are so clearly universal that we need to address them together”…Good Guy, Good Music, & Part of the Solution!

#7.  John Legend…www.JohnLegend.com & www.showmecampaign.org…In 2007 he started The Show Me Campaign, after reading ‘The End Of Poverty’, by Prof. Jeffrey Sach’s, which inspired him to “…learn more about making life better for people who live under the poverty line”…he’s also involved with CARE.org, Management Leadership for Tomorrow, Millennium Promise, REDWIRE.com, & Rock The Vote…he’s performed at Live Earth & Peace One Day concerts, & many times has publicly performed & spoken on behalf of Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. But get this: Mr. Legend partnered with Tide in 2007 to raise awareness for Hurricane Katrina victims…”He spend a day folding laundry at The Tide Clean Start mobile laundromat and visited homes that Tide is helping to rebuild in that community”…alright, besides his fabulous music, you can see why we luv him so much!

A Big Phat P.S. : All of the band members are just as magnificent as the top 7 musicians. There’s no way that these people of Integrity, would work & breathe air space with people who weren’t on their own top 7 list. We know & love them for that!
