Chef Jamie Oliver Food Revolution

December 24, 2009 by Robin · 3 Comments

Jamie is out in the United States this autumn making his next prime time series for American TV on ABC. It’s set in the lovely town of Huntington, West Virginia, which has been called the unhealthiest city in America. But frankly, Huntington has the same kind of problems with bad health, obesity and diet that people have all over the United States, and back home in the UK.

Jamie wants to take a look at what kids are eating at school and what families are eating at home. His big challenge will be getting the whole community to rally together and be able to cook with fresh ingredients. He’s seen how, with a little bit of confidence, people can quickly start to change the way they eat and live

Obama: I came here to act

December 18, 2009 by Robin · Leave a Comment

“Our ability to take collective action is in doubt,” US President Barack Obama warned the plenary at COP15.

Rie Jerichow

As the fifth speaker, President Barack Obama took the floor in the plenary. He stressed that he did not come to talk, but to act.

Being the world largest economy and second largest emitter of greenhouse gases, America has a responsibility, he said, and added that America would continue to move toward a green economy – “but we will be stronger if we act together,” he said.

He told the heads of state and governments that it is imperative with a “mechanism to review whether we are keeping our commitments, and to exchange this information in a transparent manner.” Without such accountability, any agreement would be “empty words on a page”.

New computer modeling suggests the Arctic Ocean may be nearly ice-free in the summertime as early as 2014, Al Gore said Monday at the UN climate conference.

Northern polar sea ice has been retreating dramatically. These new projections suggest an almost-vanished summer ice cap much earlier than foreseen by a US government agency just eight months ago.”It is hard to capture the astonishment that the experts in the science of ice felt when they saw this,” former US Vice President Gore told reporters and other conference participants at a joint briefing with Scandinavian officials and scientists, his first appearance at the two-week session.

The group presented two new reports updating fast-moving developments in Antarctica, the autonomous Danish territory of Greenland, and the rest of the Arctic.

“The time for collective and immediate action on climate change is now,” said Denmark’s foreign minister, Per Stig Møller.
