CHEAT THE RECESSION - what can be done..

In an article in Metropolis Magazine, writer John Hockenberry suggests that, in the present economy, the only way to coax money out of consumers’ wallets is to give us what we wanted all along: products that last and don’t go obsolete or break down in a year.

In other words, the products should deliver real and lasting value in return for our money. They won’t have to be thrown away. That means they will be better for the planet, too, because they also deliver real and lasting value in return for the resources and don’t have to be bought over and over again.

Researcher Kamal Meattle shows how an arrangement of three common houseplants, used in specific spots in a home or office building, can result in measurably cleaner indoor air. This is accomplished with 3 types of carefully selected basic and common waist high potted plants. Areca Palm , Mother-in-law’s Tongue and “Money Tree”. Of particular note is that studies show, 20% productivity improvement in workers and a 1% increase in blood oxygen ( measured after only 10 hours ). Impressive. It would seem that if you must plant a tree, put one of these 3 in your office or home at the very least, and at the best, follow Kamal’s simple guidance for trees per person for 100% balance, essentially erasing your own exhaled C02 footprint such as it is, and being healthy while doing it.

Here at CTNGREEN NYC we have Areca Palms and Bamboo, some spider plants for the windows and have noticed that this also levels the room humidity ( as measured by our tech toys for that ) which also makes for a far more comfortable workspace… although not mentioned in his talk, Humidity and aspiration are rather closely related and merely attending to oxygen levels is insufficient for human optimal environmental management.

In Very Dusty areas, wiping the leaves is needed to maximize the benefits, and an electrostatic duster will get this done in seconds. ROBOT FISH to Study Harbor Waters

A school of mechanical, battery-powered robots in the shape of fish will be released into a Spanish port to help monitor pollution there, scientists said Friday.

The 5-foot-long (1.5-meter-long) robots work by mimicking the swishing movements of a fish’s tail, according to University of Essex robotics expert Huosheng Hu, whose team is manufacturing the machines.

He said the robo-fish would be equipped with sensors to monitor oxygen levels in the water, detect oil slicks spilled from ships or contaminants pumped into the water from underground pipes.

The robotic fish will patrol the harbor of Gijon, in northern Spain under a 2.5-million-pound ($3.6 million) grant from the European Union. Hu said Gijon was chosen because port authorities there had expressed an interest in the technology.
